Signs it may be time
Every kid loses focus or fidgets sometimes. It may be worth an evaluation when the pattern is persistent and getting in the way: homework takes far longer than it should, teachers keep raising concerns, or your child is bright but their grades or behavior don't show it.

ADHD isn't the only explanation. Anxiety, sleep problems, learning differences, and autism can all look like ADHD from the outside. A careful evaluation sorts out what's actually going on so you get recommendations that fit your child.

Autism can look a lot like ADHD, and the two often occur together. See autism assessment.

If your questions are broader than ADHD, I also offer a comprehensive psychological evaluation.
What the evaluation includes
A detailed interview with you covering your child's history, school, friendships, and health.

Rating scales from parents and teachers, sent after the testing day, so the picture includes how your child does at home and at school.

Testing of attention and executive functioning using state-of-the-science industry-standard assessments.

Emotional and behavioral assessment, when appropriate, to rule in or rule out conditions that mimic or accompany ADHD.

A written report and a feedback session with specific recommendations for home and school. The report can be shared with your child's school to support a 504 plan or IEP.

How the process works
Step 1: A free 15-minute phone consultation to clarify your questions and make sure an evaluation is a good fit.

Step 2: Testing day, about 4 hours at my Boulder office. We start with roughly an hour of clinical interview, then complete all testing in the same visit. Sometimes I may send additional measures to you for you to complete at home.

Step 3: A feedback session about two weeks later, in person or by video, where we review your results and written report together.

Before testing day: get a good night's sleep, eat regular meals, and bring glasses and snacks if you like. We talk about what your child is struggling with, then do some activities together that are like puzzles or games. Parent and teacher rating scales are sent after testing day, usually electronically.

Assessments are private pay; I accept HSA/FSA cards and can offer 0% interest pay-over-time plans for qualifying individuals. I can also provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement. See Fees for current pricing.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a child or teen ADHD evaluation cost?
See our Fees page for current costs. That cost covers the interview, testing, scoring, a written report, and a feedback session. We accept HSA and FSA cards and offer 0% interest pay-over-time plans for qualifying individuals.

How long does ADHD testing for a child take?
The evaluation itself is usually a single appointment of about 4 hours at my Boulder office, starting with roughly an hour of interview. You receive the results at a feedback session about two weeks later.

What ages do you test for ADHD?
I test children and teens starting at age 6. Adults age 18 and up are evaluated on the adult ADHD testing page. Autism assessment is available starting around age 4 to 5.

Can the report be used for a 504 plan or IEP?
Yes. You'll receive a written report with a diagnosis, if the evaluation supports one, and specific recommendations that you can share with your child's school to support a 504 plan or IEP.

Can you test for ADHD and autism at the same time?
Yes, if needed. ADHD and autism can occur together and can look similar, so I am able to evaluate for both in a single assessment at the same fee.

How soon can we get an appointment?
There is currently no wait for a testing appointment. The first step is a free 15-minute phone consultation.
Does insurance cover ADHD testing for children?
Assessments at Redwood Psychology are private pay. I don't bill insurance directly, but I can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

Do I need a referral?
No. You can contact me directly to schedule a free 15-minute consultation.
