Is it ADHD, or something else?

Maybe you've always lost track of time, started more projects than you finished, or felt like you work twice as hard as everyone else to keep up. Maybe your child was recently diagnosed and you recognized yourself in the description.

Adult ADHD is real and common, but anxiety, depression, sleep problems, burnout, trauma, and autism can all look like ADHD from the outside. A careful evaluation sorts out what's actually driving your difficulties so treatment targets the right thing.

This evaluation is for adults (18+) who suspect they've had ADHD since childhood but were never evaluated, were diagnosed as a child and want an updated adult evaluation, or were told it was "just anxiety" or "just depression" and treatment hasn't fully helped. Many adults, and many women in particular, are identified late because their ADHD showed up as disorganization, perfectionism, worry, or exhaustion rather than the hyperactivity people picture.

If your child is the one who needs an evaluation, I also do ADHD testing for children and teens. And because ADHD and autism often occur together, I can evaluate for both in one visit: see autism assessment.

If your questions are broader than ADHD, I also offer a comprehensive psychological evaluation.

What the evaluation includes

A detailed clinical interview covering your history, from childhood to now.

Standardized ADHD rating scales, plus input from someone who knows you well, when possible.

Testing of attention and executive functioning using state-of-the-science industry-standard assessments.

Personality and emotional assessment, when appropriate, to rule in or rule out conditions that mimic or accompany ADHD.

A clear, easy-to-understand written report and a feedback session with specific recommendations for work, school, relationships, and treatment.

How the process works

Step 1: A free 15-minute phone consultation to clarify your questions and make sure an evaluation is a good fit.

Step 2: Testing day, about 4 hours at my Boulder office. We start with roughly an hour of clinical interview, then complete all testing in the same visit. Sometimes I may send additional measures to you for you to complete at home.

Step 3: A feedback session about two weeks later, in person or by video, where we review your results and written report together.

You don't need to prepare for testing day. If you have them, old report cards or a list of your medications can be helpful, but they aren't necessary.

Assessments are private pay; I accept HSA/FSA cards and can offer 0% interest pay-over-time plans for qualifying individuals. I can also provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement. See Fees for current pricing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an adult ADHD evaluation cost?

See our Fees page for current costs. That cost covers the interview, testing, scoring, a written report, and a feedback session. We accept HSA and FSA cards and offer 0% interest pay-over-time plans for qualifying individuals.

How long does adult ADHD testing take?

The evaluation itself is usually a single appointment of about 4 hours at my Boulder office, starting with roughly an hour of clinical interview. You receive your results at a feedback session about two weeks later.

Can adult ADHD testing be done by telehealth?

The testing appointment is in person at my Boulder office. The free 15-minute consultation is by phone, and the feedback session can be in person or by secure video.

Will I get a diagnosis I can use for medication or accommodations?

If the evaluation shows ADHD, you'll receive a formal diagnosis and a written report you can share with your prescriber, employer, or school. If it doesn't, the report explains what is going on and what to do about it.

Do you test for ADHD and autism at the same time?

Yes, if needed. ADHD and autism can occur together and can look similar, so I am able to evaluate for both in a single assessment at the same fee.

Does insurance cover adult ADHD testing?

Assessments at Redwood Psychology are private pay. I don't bill insurance directly, but I can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can contact me directly to schedule a free 15-minute consultation.
