Autism Assessment
in Boulder, Colorado

For children (about age 4 to 5 and up), teens, and adults.

At Redwood Psychology in Boulder, I'm Dr. Ryan Poling, a licensed psychologist, and I evaluate children (about age 4–5 and up), teens and adults for autism in one 4-hour visit, with a written report and feedback session about two weeks later. ADHD can be evaluated in the same visit at no additional cost. It's private pay, with HSA/FSA, superbills and 0% interest pay-over-time plans for qualifying individuals.

Wondering if you might have autism?

Many adults with autism, especially women, high-achievers, and people who learned early to "mask," reach adulthood without ever being identified. You might have always felt a little out of step socially, been exhausted by situations others seem to find easy, or had intense interests and sensory sensitivities that you could never quite name.

For children and teens, the questions often show up as social difficulties, anxiety, shutdowns, or a sense that school is much harder than it should be.

I approach autism assessment as a collaborative, neurodiversity-affirming process. A good assessment gives you language for your experience and leaves you understanding yourself better, not feeling labeled.

ADHD and autism often occur together. If attention and focus are also a concern, see adult ADHD testing or ADHD testing for children and teens.

If your questions are broader than autism, I also offer a comprehensive psychological evaluation.

What the assessment includes

A developmental and personal history: childhood, school, relationships, sensory experiences, and current challenges. For children and teens, this includes parent and, when useful, teacher input.

Standardized autism-specific measures and rating scales.

Assessment of related factors (attention, executive functioning, mood, anxiety, and personality) to clarify the full picture, including whether ADHD is also present.

Input from someone who knows you well, when possible.

A clear, easy-to-understand written report and a feedback session with clear conclusions and practical recommendations for work, school, relationships, and self-understanding.

How the process works

Step 1: A free 15-minute phone consultation to clarify your questions and make sure an evaluation is a good fit.

Step 2: Testing day, about 4 hours at my Boulder office. We start with roughly an hour of clinical interview, then complete all testing in the same visit. Sometimes I may send additional measures to you for you to complete at home.

Step 3: A feedback session about two weeks later, in person or by video, where we review your results and written report together.

Assessments are private pay; I accept HSA/FSA cards and can offer 0% interest pay-over-time plans for qualifying individuals. I can also provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement. See Fees for current pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Can adults be diagnosed with autism?

Yes. Many people aren't identified until adulthood, especially if they learned to mask or compensate. A comprehensive adult autism evaluation looks at both your developmental history and your current experience to determine whether autism fits.

How much does an autism assessment cost in Boulder?

See our Fees page for current costs. That cost covers the interview, testing, scoring, a written report, and a feedback session, and evaluation for ADHD at the same time if needed. We accept HSA and FSA cards and offer 0% interest pay-over-time plans for qualifying individuals.

What ages do you assess for autism?

I assess children starting around age 4 to 5, as well as teens and adults.

Can an autism assessment be done online?

The testing appointment is in person at my Boulder office. The free 15-minute consultation is by phone, and the feedback session can be in person or by secure video.

Does insurance cover autism testing?

Assessments are private pay. I don't bill insurance directly, but I can provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement. HSA/FSA cards are accepted, and I offer 0% interest pay-over-time plans for qualifying individuals.

What if I'm not autistic?

The report will explain what does account for your experiences, whether that's ADHD, anxiety, a different pattern, or simply a unique profile, and give you specific recommendations either way.

Do you also test for ADHD?

Yes, if needed. Autism and ADHD can occur together, so I am able to evaluate for both in a single assessment at no additional cost.
