Psychological Assessment

Comprehensive Psychological Evaluation in Boulder, Colorado

Clear answers, a detailed report, and real next steps.

At Redwood Psychology in Boulder, I'm Dr. Ryan Poling, a licensed psychologist, and I do comprehensive psychological evaluations for children, teens, and adults age 6 and up, usually in one 4-hour testing visit, with a written report and feedback session about two weeks later. It's private pay, with HSA/FSA, superbills and 0% interest pay-over-time plans for qualifying individuals.

Clear diagnostic answers.

Who this is for

A comprehensive evaluation is most useful when you need a clearer answer than a single diagnosis or a short screening can give. It may be a good fit if your diagnosis is unclear or has changed from one provider to the next, treatment hasn't worked the way you or your provider expected, or your symptoms overlap and it's hard to tell whether you're dealing with depression, anxiety, ADHD, trauma, a mood disorder, a personality pattern, or a mix.

It can also help when you want a second opinion or a fresh, thorough look, or when your therapist, psychiatrist, or physician wants a clearer picture to guide your care.

If you only need an ADHD or autism evaluation, those have their own pages: adult ADHD testing, child and teen ADHD testing, and autism assessment. A comprehensive evaluation looks more broadly at how you think, feel, and relate to others.

What the evaluation includes

A detailed interview about your history, symptoms, relationships, work or school, and health. With your permission, I also gather input from your therapist, psychiatrist, or other providers.

Personality and symptom measures, including questionnaires that map out emotional, behavioral, and personality patterns, along with measures for the specific questions at hand.

Performance-based personality assessment, tasks that show how you actually think and cope, which can answer diagnostic questions that self-report alone can miss.

Testing of thinking skills, when needed. If attention, memory, or problem-solving are part of the question, I include cognitive testing. If they aren't, we skip it.

A written report and feedback session with a clear diagnostic picture and practical recommendations for treatment, school, or work, explained in plain language.

How the process works

Step 1: A free 15-minute phone consultation to clarify your questions and make sure an evaluation is a good fit.

Step 2: Testing day, usually about 4 hours at my Boulder office. Interview and testing happen in the same visit. Sometimes I may send additional measures for you to complete at home.

Step 3: A feedback session about two weeks later, in person or by video, where we review your results and written report together.

For therapists, psychiatrists, and other providers: I accept referrals for diagnostic clarification. You'll receive a detailed report with diagnostic impressions and treatment recommendations, usually about two weeks after testing, and I'm glad to talk through the findings with the referring provider with the patient's consent.

Assessments are private pay; I accept HSA/FSA cards and can offer 0% interest pay-over-time plans for qualifying individuals. I can also provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement. See Fees for current pricing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a comprehensive psychological evaluation cost?

See our Fees page for current costs. That cost covers the interview, testing, scoring, a written report, and a feedback session. We accept HSA and FSA cards and offer 0% interest pay-over-time plans for qualifying individuals.

How long does a psychological evaluation take?

Testing is usually a single appointment of about 4 hours at my Boulder office. You receive the results at a feedback session about two weeks later, along with your written report.

What ages do you evaluate?

I evaluate children, teens, and adults starting at age 6.

What is the difference between a psychological evaluation and ADHD testing?

ADHD testing answers one question: whether ADHD is the explanation. A comprehensive psychological evaluation looks more broadly at mood, anxiety, personality, thinking, and behavior, so it can sort out overlapping or unclear diagnoses. If ADHD is part of the picture, it can be included.

Does the evaluation include cognitive testing?

When it will help answer your question, yes. If attention, memory, or problem-solving are part of what we're trying to understand, I include cognitive testing. If they aren't, we leave it out.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can contact me directly to schedule a free 15-minute consultation. I also accept referrals from therapists, psychiatrists, and other providers.

Does insurance cover psychological evaluations?

Assessments at Redwood Psychology are private pay. I don't bill insurance directly, but I can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

How soon can we get an appointment?

The first step is a free 15-minute phone consultation, and we'll find a testing time that works for you.
